Tell Me More About Tech: Generating New Evidence on How Child Sexual Abuse Offenders Misuse Technology

PROJECT LAUNCH

Protect Children is undertaking a new research project, “Tell Me More About Tech”, aiming to generate new evidence on how child sexual abuse offenders misuse technology.

More than 300 million children are victims of online child sexual abuse and exploitation every year. The swift advancement of technology has led to an alarming increase in the availability of CSAM across online and digital platforms. There is a pressing need for more information to turn the tide on online child sexual abuse and exploitation.

To address this critical knowledge gap, Protect Children is launching a new innovative research project – Tell Me More About Tech. With input from relevant stakeholders, Protect Children will develop a comprehensive survey to collect insights into the role of technology in enabling online crimes of sexual violence against children from active anonymous child sexual abuse offenders. The research will explore how different technology ecosystems facilitate and drive abuse, and how they influence offender’s behaviours, including their encouragement and facilitation of sexual violence against children. Protect Children will use the gained insights to support regulators with critical knowledge necessary to address the evolving landscape of online child sexual abuse and exploitation.

Tell Me More About Tech builds on Protect Children’s groundbreaking ReDirection and 2KNOW projects. The ReDirection project research revealed the increasing ease to access and disseminate CSAM on the surface web, via popular social media platforms and messengers. The research conducted in Project 2KNOW unveiled the crucial role of technological advancements and the anonymity of the internet in enabling child sexual abuse offending.

Tell Me More About Tech is funded by Ofcom.
