Protect Children at PIER24: Advancing Online Safety for Children

We are thrilled to share that the Protect Children team recently attended the inspiring #PIER24 conference. This event brought together leading experts and advocates dedicated to tackling online sexual abuse and exploitation of children.


Our team members, Katariina Leivo, Tegan Insoll, Anna Ovaska, and Nina Vaaranen-Valkonen, had the honour of presenting our latest work and insights, fostering valuable discussions on innovative strategies and collaborative efforts in child protection.


A highlight of the conference was our Executive Director, Nina Vaaranen-Valkonen, receiving the award for ‘Most Significant Contribution to the Global Response to Online CSA’ at the 2024 Excellence in Online Protection awards. This esteemed recognition underscores Nina's relentless dedication and the impactful work of our entire team.

📍The Global Prevalence of Online Abuse, The Survivor's Voice and Pathways to Offending. Nina Vaaranen-Valkonen presented findings from our #OurVoice Global Survivor Survey alongside Elly Hanson and Michael Salter.


📍Behind Closed Doors: Insights into Undetected CSAM Offenders on the Dark Web. Anna Ovaska and Tegan Insoll discuss new research to understand online offenders


📍Supporting Victims of Online Child Sexual Abuse. Nina Vaaranen-Valkonen and Katariina Leivo share learnings from our You Are Enough parental peer support groups.


📍Offender Deterrence and Intervention. Spotlight of the Sparks in the Dark community, including Anna Ovaska introducing our 2KNOW project and Tegan Insoll with updates from the Bridge project.


We extend our heartfelt thanks to the International Policing and Public Protection Research Institute, Simon Bailey CBE, QPM, DL, and Samantha Lundrigan for hosting such an inspiring and impactful event. We look forward to building on the connections and knowledge gained at #PIER24 as we continue our mission to protect children from online abuse and exploitation.
